News for MRC Staff in Cambridge, May 2005

On offer this summer - free students, free trips, free training, free money and much more! Read below and contact me for further information about any of these opportunities.

The MRC financially supports the Nuffield Science Bursary Scheme
, whereby bright A-level students give up four to six weeks of their summer holiday to work with scientists on specific projects (this is not work experience!). In Cambridge there are 10 students wishing to participate this summer in a project involving chemistry, biochemistry or biology related to the medical field. Can you offer a placement? This is an excellent opportunity to introduce students to high-quality research and the nature of science. Please respond urgently!

Following the recent general election, our democratic process is perhaps slightly clearer, but electing a new government is only the start of it! Here's a chance to find out what actually goes on in Parliament and how MRC scientific research can be turned into policy and practice. 6 MRC Cambridge scientists have the chance to visit Parliament
, meet an MP, find out how a Select Committee works and really get a feel for how MRC science can be communicated effectively. The visit will hopefully take place this summer (date to be confirmed). If you would like the chance to find out more about promoting your science in Parliament, get in touch.

If you have been put off organising events for the public through lack of funds, why not apply for a Public Engagement Grant
of up to 2k (maximum sum to be confirmed). This system of new-style grants from Research Councils UK will be firmed up over the summer. So if you're preparing for the next Science Week or another public event, I can guide you with your application.

There will be a workshop on public engagement training for Cambridge scientists taking place on 20 June for Career Development Fellows, Investigator Scientists, Research Associates and Programme-Leader Trackers.  Places are going fast so get in touch now!

A new 40-page MRC colour publication, ageing and health, MRC research for lifelong health is now available. The booklet focuses on MRC-funded research into the bodily processes responsible for ageing and the effect they can have on health in later life. It also shows how groundbreaking discoveries by MRC scientists are translated into new treatments and other health benefits for older people. The booklet would make a good addition to foyer displays and for helping with general enquiries.

Congratulations to Dr Harvey McMahon and Yvonne Vallis (MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology) for awarding two summer placements to the winning students from Hills Road Sixth Form College in their 'Imagining the Brain' art competition
to portray MRC neuroscience through art. Please let me know if you or your colleagues have any interest in exploring potential MRC projects to engage the public through art.
